Nepalese Politician Sending Confusing Messages

Issue 42, October 14, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

October 13, 2012: “If parties fail to reach to an understanding over the contentious issues at the earliest, I shall intervene; I am not only a patron of constitution. I have also a duty to safeguard achievements attained through different democratic revolution,” ‘THT ONLINE‘ quotes Head of State Dr. Ram Baran Yadav as saying while inaugurating the Chamber Day 2012 amidst a function held by Nepal Chamber of Commerce in Kathmandu today.

If the Head of State is serious about what he is talking about then he is not only putting his office at risk but also all the achievements made by the people during the last six years. So, if Dr. Ram Baran Yadav wants his name as the first elected president of Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal to be written in the golden letters in the history of Nepal then he needs to follow the rule of law rather than breaking it. Following the rule of law means shepherding all political parties to elections to a new CA. Mr. President has no rights to overstep the constitution.

In an interview given to the Himalaya Television today, Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal said that his party was ready to revive the dissolved CA, writes nepalnews.com.

The Standing Committee of CPN-UML in its meeting held today decided the fresh elections to a new CA instead of reviving the dissolved CA. Coming out of the meeting, senior leader Madhav Nepal told the reporters that the Standing Committee decided to opt for the fresh elections to a new CA, and directed the Standing Committee members not to lobby for the CA reinstatement, writes ‘THT ONLINE’.

Addressing a rally held by the NC in Nepalgunj today, president of NC Sushil Koirala directed the party cadres to prepare for the elections, and reminded the cadres of the electoral loss the party faced in the elections to the CA in 2008 and asked them to work with high morale to make the party victorious this time, writes nepalnews.com. The NC president also said that the proposal of the UCPN-Maoist for reviving the dissolved CA was an attempt to prolong their stay in power, and criticized the NC leaders talking about CA revival, had "fallen into the Maoists' trap".

"It is yet not known whether the anticipated 2013 elections will be for a new Constituent Assembly or for a parliament as discussions are still ongoing on a possible revival of the CA. Whatever the exact path taken by the parties, seeking fresh mandate sooner will provide a wider legitimacy to the political decision-making," said a statement issued by diplomatic missions of the EU, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Switzerland and the UK yesterday, writes nepalnews.com.
