Issue 10, March 10, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

March 6, 2013: probably only such things could happen in Nepal, as taxi drivers have protested against the actions of the joint monitoring team of the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD), Nepal Bureau of Standards & Metrology, and the Kathmandu Metropolitan City against their tampering with the taxis meters following commuters’ complaints. These taxi drivers demand to continue the stealing from the passengers tampering with the meters fitted in the taxis.

They parked their taxis in Tundikhel yesterday protesting against the checking of the meters to see whether they are tampered with the meters or not. These taxi drivers have been used to steal the passengers tampering with the meters to charge high prices.

Shree Swostik Self-employed Taxi Loan Burrower Entrepreneurs’ Association: a recently formed association closed to Nepal Meter Taxi Entrepreneurs’ Association (NMTEA) held the protest rally. Chairman of the Shree Swostik Self-employed Taxi Entrepreneurs,’ Prakash Basnet said that the rally was against haphazard, monopoly and harassing behaviors shown by the traffic police, according to ‘Gorkhapatraonline.com news of today.

Kathmandu has currently more than 7000 taxis. The association warned of holding series of protests if the traffic police were not to change the way of raiding taxis.

Even such unscrupulous taxi drivers could challenge the government in the current fluid political situation. Those drivers tampering with the meters would have been landed in a jail if they were in the country where the rule of law is strictly enforced. However, in Nepal, they could come out openly demanding to continue the illegal business.
