Speaking Hindi and Demanding One Madhesh

Issue 29, July 20, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

The Constituent Assembly (CA) members belonging to the Terai-based political parties such as Madheshi Janadhikar Forum, Terai Madhesh Loktantrik Party and Nepal Sadbhavana Party taking oath and speaking Hindi at the CA session rather than speaking their mother tongues provoked serious criticism from Nepalis in general and some nationalist Terai people in particular. Loyal Nepalis have said that CA members speaking Hindi at the CA session have dishonored their mother tongues and showed disloyalty to the country.

Constituent Assembly (CA) members belonging to the Terai-based political parties had taken the CA hostage for 12 days demanding ‘One-Madheh One Province’ and then permitting to the CA to do regular business but boycotting the sessions. Political parties such as Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist and Leninist (CPN-UML) and Nepali Congress (NC) have been deadly against the demand. Indigenous people such as Tharus and some other political parties such as Chure-Bhavar Ekta Party and Left Political parties have protested against the demand for ‘One Madhesh One Province.’

Probably, in response to the protest of Tharus, Madheshi Janadhikar Forum elected Bijaya Kumar Gachhedar a Tharu by birth as its parliamentary leader. Gachhedar quit the parent party NC just before the CA poll in April after he did not receive the ticket for the election for the CA and joined the Madheshi Janadhikar Forum. He was not an unsullied personality even as the member of the NC.
