Raiding Storehouses Price control

Issue 31, August 2, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

July 31, 2009: A few days ago, the Madhav administration has raided the storehouses of some large business houses in Kathmandu in a bid to control the skyrocketing prices of food and vegetables in Kathmandu. The raiding of storehouses has provoked the officials of the associations of businesspersons and industrialists to protest against such raids. The office holders of the associations have complained to the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister that such raids of the administration on the storehouses go against the principles of the free trade.

At the same time, the Madhav administration has relaxed the control imposed by the previous administration on the smugglers and the revenue offices returning the smugglers back to operation and the revenue officials back to getting additional payments for their work at revenue offices from the clients.

The local press has reported that the smuggling of sandalwood from Nepal to Tibet has restarted; and revenue officials anticipate payments from the clients.  Sandalwood is used for smoldering for fragrance at monasteries and other religious shrines in Tibet and Nepal.
