Lay Claim To Lead HLPM

Issue 13, March 28, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

March 24, 2010: Nepali Congress leaders have laid claim to lead the High Level Political Mechanism (HLPM) believing they are the heirs to the chair of the HLPM after the death of Girija Prasad Koirala the coordinator of the HLPM. It is natural they lay claim to lead but they have to show their ability to do so. So far, Nepali Congress leaders have been working on the shadow of towering figure Girija Prasad Koirala.

The Nepali Congress leaders have said that the NC leaders have played an important role in the peace process; so they are the heirs to the chair of the HLPM; and they have decided to turn over the chair to the Acting President of NC Sushil Koirala. One thing the NC leaders have not taken into account is Sushil Koirala is a man rejected by the voters. So, they need to think whether the NC has no leaders other than Sushil Koirala to lead the HLPM.

Certainly, anybody could lay claim for the chair of the HLPM but anybody holding the chair needs to show the strong political will to complete the peace process following the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) the Government of Nepal has reached with the Maoists. In the past, Sushil Koirala has been deadly against the peace process, as he has repeatedly been saying that he is not for integrating the two armies into a single army going against the CPA.

Anybody could lead the HLPM or the peace process willing to strictly follow the CPA. So, anybody could inherit the chair of the HLPM but s/he needs to be a real peacemaker not a breaker.

Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala was the coordinator of the HLPM, Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda and Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal are the members of the HLPM and Prime Minister Madhav Nepal is an invitee to it.
