Filing For Nominations Of Candidates For The Local Elections

KTM Metro Reporter

Kathmandu, May 2, 2017: the Election Commission has opened up its office from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm today for filing for the nominations of candidates for the local elections in three States where the first phase elections are to be held on May 14, 2017. The second phase elections in the remaining four States will be held on June 14, 2017. Most of the areas of the first phase elections are in the hills except for the Chitwan.

Rastriya Janata Party: amalgamation of the Madheshi political parties is not fielding its candidates for the first phase elections but Federal Social Forum Nepal: combination of the Madheshi and ethnic parties is fielding its candidates. Probably, Rastriya Janata Party has no influences in the hill areas so it has remained aloof from the elections in the hills.

Some politicians including the leaders of the CPN-UML and political analysts have charged the government with bringing up the motion to impeach the Chief Justice of Supreme Court of Nepal for setting aside the local elections but the filing for nominations of candidates today surely shows that elections will be held as scheduled.

However, the motion to impeach the Chief Justice has heated up the political debate in the Nepalese media strengthening the rights to free speech and freedom of expression. Many political parties and politicians have opposed the impeachment proposal. Even the four retired chief justices have come out against the impeachment proposal. NC and CPN-Maoist-Center and their supporters justified the motion to impeach the Chief Justice.

Rastriya Prajantantra Party (RRP) has even decided to pull out of the government and revoke the support given to the government. However, RPP will vote for the “Amendment to Constitution Bill” in the parliament, the news in the State-run newspaper gorkhapatra” stated.

The news in the State-run newspaper “gorkhapatra” stated today that the coalition partners have still a majority to remain in the government even when the RPP walks out of the government. It has not threatened the government.

Prime Minister Prachanda and his coalition partner NC have said that the motion to impeach the chief justice is for strengthening the judiciary, for saving the independence of Judiciary, and making it transparent.

Suspended Chief Justice Sushila Karki has said that she would face the impeachment with courage. She has only 37 days to remaining office before retirement but she is facing the impeachment.

The motion to impeach the Chief Justice has sent the waves of discussions in the media. It has strengthened the democracy and democratic practices. It also has proved that the media is the fourth pillar of democracy.

It also has sent the strong message to other heads and deputies of the constitutional bodies including the president and the vice-president that they have to strictly follow the Constitution and laws otherwise they would need to face the parliament bringing in a motion to impeach them at any time. It has further strengthened the rule of law.
