Kathmandu: the parliamentary State Affairs Committee is for passing the two bills on provincial and federal elections adopting a fast-track path, said Chairman of the committee Dilbahadur Gharti; it was supposed to pass even on Friday, August 31 after the clause-wise discussion on bills, and after the discussion on the controversial amendment put forward for making provision for allowing convicted criminals to be eligible for contesting the elections; it won’t be difficult to pass the bills after the political party and the lawmakers proposing an amendment to this end have backtracked, the news in “gorkhapatra” of today stated.
Nineteen NC lawmakers had proposed an amendment to the bills for making the convicted criminals room for participating in the elections as candidates, and they had been pushing it very hard to include the amendment, as most of the criminals convicted for corruption in the NC party had shown their power to influence the party and the lawmakers. However, the lawmakers and the NC had backed off from the amendment after the strong criticism from the private media and the public in general.
