May Day Celebration And Political Uncertainty In Nepal

Issue 19, May 9, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

May 2, 2010: the UCPN-Maoist has celebrated the 121st May Day in Kathmandu and more than seventy towns across the country parading its cadres and converging them at Tundikhel in Kathmandu for a mass rally and at the main centers across the country for the rallies at their respective towns.

In Kathmandu, Maoists’ leaders including Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda have delivered revolutionary speeches. They have said that they are determined to fight to the finish for ‘peace and constitution’. Chairman Prachanda has said that the people’s movement has finished off the family rule in 1951, and then challenged the then government in 1979 forcing the then government to announce a referendum, and then brought down the Panchayat in 1990, and finished off the monarchy in 2006; so, this time, the people’s movement will end all sorts of the political evils.

On the contrary to the publicity of the fear-mongering state-run media and some private media stating the UCPN-Maoist cadres would indulge in violence, the May Day march of the UCPN-Maoist cadres has remained peaceful across the country. In Kathmandu, in some cases, the security people have marched along with the UCPN-Maoist cadres.

The NC leaders and cadres have also celebrated the May Day. They have to be satisfied with marching on the backyards of Patan while the UCPN-Maoist cadres have celebrated at the center of Kathmandu.

Speaking to the reporters after the failed meeting with the leaders of NC and CPN-UML on the evening of May 1, 2010, UCPN-Maoist leader Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has said that either Prime Minister Madhav Nepal should immediately quit or should work on the peace process and constitution writing; unfortunately nothing has happened to this end.

Speaking to the reporters after the failed meeting with the leaders of UCPN-Maoist and CPN-UML on the evening of May 1, 2010, NC leader Bimalendra Nidhi has said that the meeting has been unsuccessful because of the demand of the UCPN-Maoist leaders for the immediate resignation of the Madhav government.

Leaders of the three major political parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML have ended their meetings without coming to the understanding on May 1, 2010; so, the UCPN-Maoist’ movement for ‘peace and constitution’ has set on starting on May 2, 2010 shutting down the entire country.

The UCPN-Maoist cadres have enforced the shutdown of the entire country from the early morning on May 2, 2010. The anchor of the UCPN-Maoist on the May Day celebration at Tundhikhel in Kathmandu has announced that the UCPN-Maoist cadres will not stop ambulances, milk-carrying tankers, water-carrying tankers, media vehicles, and vehicles of the diplomatic missions in Nepal, and will open the businesses of the people for two hours from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM every day. Thus, the UCPN-Maoist cadres are running the country.

On the evening of May 1, 2010, in an address to the nation, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has said that he has done everything possible to the peace process and the writing of a new constitution but he has not been able to do much because of the no cooperation of the UCPN-Maoist leaders on these matters. He has also said that he is not going to quit his job as he has been standing on the support of the twenty-two political parties.

According to the Nepalese ABC TV’s breaking news, sixty legislators belonging to the CPN-UML have jointly signed for asking Madhav Nepal to resign from the position of Prime Minster to save the country from the possible civil war.
