Elections Or No Elections In Nepal: Stop Shutting Down Businesses Of Others

Issue 25, June 23, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

June 16, 2013: CPN-Maoist-Vaidhya, Madheshi People’s Rights Forum-Nepal, and Federal Socialist Party have shut down the businesses of the entire Nepalis today protesting against the second elections to a constituent assembly (CA). Leaders of these political parties must be very proud of what they have been doing but they should know that what they are doing is not political activity but criminal one; they are liable to punishment if the government has been strong enough to deal with the criminals.

These so-called political leaders indulging in criminal activities should know that closing down the business for a day costs the country billions of rupees. In addition, these political guys also spend millions of rupees on shutting down the businesses of other people. Using the money extorted from the people, they pay millions of rupees to the gangsters and criminals to break vehicles and stores of anybody dare to run or open. Thus, the poor people pay for the criminal activities of the political leaders.

If the political leaders have the guts to challenges the government they need to go to the people in other words they should participate in the elections and receive the mandate from the people what they really want to do. They have no rights to hold the entire country hostage for the ransom of opposing the elections to be held soon.

The entire world has been happy with the announcement of an election date. The international community has been glad to know that Nepal is closer to holding elections to a new CA. Political leaders have been happy to go to the people for the fresh mandate of the people.

The president has issued the Constituent Assembly Member Election Ordinance paving the way for holding the lections. The Election Commission (EC) has completed all the necessary work to hold elections. The EC is soon to print the ballot papers.

However, a group of irrational political leaders have been trying to dislodge the holding of elections to a new CA. Nepalis would rise against such irrational leaders and put an end to their criminal activities of shutting down the businesses of other people.

The nation-wide shutdown enforced by the CPN-Maoist-Vaidhya, Madheshi People’s Rights Forum-Nepal, and Federal Socialist Party has caused the untold misery to the 30 million Nepalis. Millions of Nepalis traveling from one part of the country to another have been stranded. Millions of workers have to stay home, and go hungry. Millions of students have been deprived of learning. Hundreds of visitors have to suffer from not being able to go to airports, and another hundreds must have suffered from the inconvenience of not having vehicles to reach their destinations.

The government has announced the November 19, 2013 is the day for holding elections to a second CA. Chairman of Interim Election Council of Minister Regmi is fully committed to hold the election as scheduled and he called on everybody to support the government for this purpose. So, elections would be held no matter what a few irrational so-called political leaders are doing.

These leaders protesting against holding elections need to stop their criminal activity of closing down the businesses of the people of Nepal. They have been violating the rights of other people to do their businesses. So, some advocates of such violation of human rights need to take these political leaders to the court for the punishment for violating the rights of other people.
