Happy Republic Day

Issue 21, May 25, 2008

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Civil leaders have been planning to celebrate the May 28 as the first ‘Republic Day’ with various programs and events all over Nepal. One of the civil society leaders Padma Ratna Tuladhar speaking on the Sagarmatha TV on May 19, 2008 said that the Government of Nepal needs to declare three-day national holidays starting on the eve of the ‘Republic Day’ May 27 and ending on May 29 the day after the ‘Republic Day’. He also said that they plan to illuminate all houses and main buildings at nights of those three days; so, the government needs to make sure that there won’t be any power outage in those nights.

According to Tuladhar, some artists will perform at Tundikhel-open Theater in Kathmandu on the eve of the ‘Republic Day’; revelers might continue the celebration during the rest of the night.

On May 28, Civil society leaders will take a huge procession from ‘Mandala’ at Maitighar to International Convention Center at New Baneswore, Kathmandu at about 10:00 A.M. and wait there to listen to the endorsement of ‘Nepal a Republic’ by the 601-assembly called a Constituent Assembly.

On May 29, they will celebrate the ‘Republic Day’ with various events all over Nepal.

Happy ‘Republic Day’ to all Nepalis.
