Celebrating Maha Shiva-ratri Across Nepal
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
On February 12, 2010, Nepalese Hindus have celebrated Maha Shiva-ratri visiting Lord Shiva at his shrines elsewhere in Nepal from the early morning. In Kathmandu, Nepalis have visited Lord Pashupati from the early morning. According to the state-run Radio Nepal report, about fifty thousands Nepalis have already visited Lord Pashupati by 7:00 in the morning; according to the estimate of the Shiva-ratri management Committee, about 600,000 devotees have visited Lord Pashupati by the end of the day. The Shiva-ratri management Committee has opened all four main entrances to Lord Pashupati making possible for devotees to line up at four different lines for the access to the lord in Kathmandu.
Many Nepalese Hindus keep awoke the whole night on the Shiva-ratri night. They make bonfires, cook some food on these bonfires and share the food items among them and eat them as the blessings from Lord Shiva. They also believe in that Lord Shiva appears in their vision on this night and bless them.
President Dr. Ram Baan Yadav has made especial offerings to Lord Pashupati at Deopatan in Kathmandu on the evening of the Shiva-ratri day following the tradition of the head of state making such offerings every year.
