Unusual Rains And Snow In Nepal And China

Issue 07, February 12, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

February 9, 2012: unusual rains and snow have continued in Nepal and China for two days. Rains have started in low lands including Kathmandu on Tuesday and have continued until Thursday afternoon. Heavy snowfalls have been in highland making the lives of common folks very difficult.

The Chinese state news agency called ‘Xinhua’ has reported that the roads on the border between Nepal and China have heavy snowfalls causing disruption of the traffics. On Thursday, February 9, 2012, heavy snow halted traffic on a section of the China-Nepal Highway, which links southwest China's Tibet autonomous region with Nepal, ‘Xinhua’ reported.

Workers will take five days for clearing away the deep snow and resume traffic on the road, as strong wind and low temperatures have prevented the clean-up efforts. A snowstorm hit the county early on Wednesday, bringing gales with speeds of up to 38 meters per second, said Dorji, director of the China’s meteorological bureau.

On Wednesday, police rescued 40 passengers trapped in four vehicles on a snow-covered section of a national highway in Zhongba County in Tibet's Ngari prefecture.

Snow continued to fall in the county on Thursday, and is expected to drop the temperature to minus 10 degrees Celsius, according to a forecast made by regional weather authorities.
