Hold Elections For democratic Practices

Issue 26, June 24, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

June 17, 2012: a single man out of so many leaders and cadres of the so-called democratic party called NC (Nepali Congress) has come out openly to speak up for elections to a new Constituent Assembly (CA). Probably, some other members of the NC might come out for speaking up for democratic practices, as one of them is the election to any representative institutions or offices. Since the President on the recommendation of the Prime Minister announced elections to a new CA scheduled for November 22, 2012, the NC and CPN-UML guys have been protesting against the election stating it was unconstitutional. The irony is that the so-called democratic parties have been refusing to recognize elections to a new CA as a democratic practice.

Speaking at a function held by the Solukhumbu-Kathmandu liaison committee, Central Member of Nepali Congress Dr Shekhar Koirala yesterday said that an election to the legislature-parliament was necessary to hold for drafting a new constitution; the elected parliament should promulgate a new constitution with two-thirds majority, and the disputed issues of the constitution could be settled through referendum, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes

In order to convince the leaders of the democratic parties, an election to a new CA is the only democratic way to break the current political deadlock; Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda has separately held meetings with President of NC Sushil Koirala and Chairman of CPN-UML at their respective residences yesterday.

The NC and CPN-UML leaders could not move the prime minister out of office through the democratic means; so they are now engaged in forcing him to quit the office through street protests. The NC and CPN-UML as the alliance of 27 parties yesterday decided to launch a protest program across the country demanding the resignation of the prime minister. They held a meeting at the Balkhu central office of CPN-UML and decided to start off demonstrations, torch rallies and other programs against the government from June 19 to July 9, 2012, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today reports.

Talking to the reporters at Janakpur Airport, Information and Communications Minister Raj Kishor Yadav yesterday said that announcing the elections to a new CA, the government was implementing the verdict of the Supreme Court; the duty of all democratic forces was to accept the path of democracy and urged the parties to implement the democratic norms and values; all parties accepted the democratic norms and values but failed to implement the democratic system; the Nepalese people should be careful about the parties which were not ready to establish the rights of the people; a national consensus was essential to end the current political crisis, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today reports.

President Dr Ram Baran Yadav held a tea reception for the political leaders today morning and urged them to clear up the existing differences among them to build better understanding and break the current political deadlock brought by the unceremonious dissolution of the Constituent Assembly (CA) without promulgating a constitution; the political parties are left with no other alternatives but to build a consensus on a political way out of the crisis facing the country; Vice-president Parmananda Jha, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, Maoist chairman Prachanda, CPN-UML chairman Jhalanath Khanal, NC president Sushil Koirala among other leaders were in the tea reception, according to nepalnews.com.
