Dalit Women Making Efforts On Enjoying Rights

Issue 51, December 22, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 18, 2013: a Dalit woman right activist Sita Devi Yong has been making efforts on bringing Dalit women together to fight for their rights in Krishnapur-8, Mauriphant of the Kanchanpur district, according to the RSS news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’.

Dalit women usually spent their times on the kitchen chores, currently have been coming together to form their groups to increase their negotiation power for asserting state-sponsored services and entitlements.

'There was no opportunity for women to participate in assembly meetings; and raising voice for their right was a far cry. In addition, Dalit women were treated as a social outcaste', she said. 'Being organized in groups, we Dalit women here have started seeking our rights and benefits provided by the government', she further explained.

The response from the public agency has been different when we put forward our voice collectively, said Bhagrati BK, a local Dalit woman. Now, the services and benefits provided by VDC, schools and community schools have improved, she added. The best practice set by Dalit women of Mauriphanta for asserting their rights has been expanded in other areas in the district.
