Staffs Of NEA Revolting Against The Management

Issue 23, June 9, 2013
By KTM Metro Reporter

June 7, 2013: staffs of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) did not allow anybody to enter the offices of the NEA protesting against the decision on increasing the capacity of the Trishuli 3 ‘A’ hydropower plant from 60 MW to 90 MW. The staffs have charged the management of the NEA with the greed of receiving the commission on awarding the construction of the increased capacity of the Trishuli 3 ‘A’, has taken such a decision ignoring the millions if not billions of rupees worth of loss the NEA has to take, according to the news ‘gorkhapatra’ of yesterday.

A group of former finance and energy ministers met with chairman of Election Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi yesterday, told him that the decision of the NEA to increase the project's capacity from 60 MW to 90 MW will cause at least Rs 2 billion loss to the NEA; therefore, the government should revoke the decision on upgrading the built-in capacity of Trishuli 3 ‘A’, according to nepalnews.com

NEA staffers protesting against the decision say that the hydropower plant will produce the extra 30 MW only during the wet season. So, it will not mitigate the load-shedding during the dry season. They also have suspected massive irregularities in awarding the upgrading contract to the Chinese firm. Successive energy ministers such as Mahat, Bista and UCPN (M)'s Post Bahadur Bogati had rejected the contractor's attempt on securing upgrading the contract, according to nepalnews.com.
