One-month Delay In Issuing MRPs

April 3, 2010: in a statement released on April 2, 2010, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that the issue of machine-readable passports (MRPs) will be delayed by one month. However, any Nepalese citizen could register his/her application at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry will issue MRPs following the first-come-first service. The Ministry will set the fee for MRPs.
The government headed by Madhav Nepal has cancelled the international bids called for printing MRPs and then awarded the printing of MRPs to the Indian-government-owned security press.
According to the local media, the government has awarded the printing of MRPs to the Indian company at US $ 4 (four US dollar) per piece whereas one of the international company has bid for printing MRPs at Singapore dollar 2.5 per piece.
Buying rate of US dollar is Rs 71.50, and of Singapore dollar is Rs 51.09 according to the state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of April 3, 2010.
