Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in Nepal

Issue 49, December 07, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On Monday, December 02, 2008, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi with a 10-member delegation arrived in Kathmandu on a three-day visit. Nepalese Foreign Minister Upendra Yadav received Foreign Minister Jiechi at the International Airport, Kathmandu.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi’s visit is to bolster its ties with Nepal and is in preparation for the visit of Nepalese Prime Minister Prachanda to China. During his three-day stay in Nepal, the Chinese minister is schedule to make a courtesy call on President Ram Baran Yadav and hold formal talks with Prime Minister ‘Prachanda’ as well as Foreign Minister Upendra Yadav.

The Chinese must have made good influence on the Maoist-led government, as we do not have any news of Tibetan exiles holding any protest rallies at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. Previously, Tibetan exiles holding a protest rally in Kathmandu had been a daily event since the anniversary of the Tibetan uprising against the Chinese rule on March 12, 2008. The Maoist government has effectively controlled the movement of Tibetans in Nepal checking the travel documents of Tibetan exiles. They believed in well-trained Tibetan exiles in Dharmshala, India come to Nepal to hold protest rallies at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu.
