Seminar On Nepal In New Delhi

Issue 02, January 09, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

January 6, 2011: the second-tiered leaders of three major political parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML have assembled in New Delhi to discuss the political future of Nepal in the seminar held by a newly established think tank called ‘Vivekanand International Foundation’ on January 6 and 7, 2011, and then prescribed a strategy for breaking the current political deadlock in Nepal.

One of Vice-chairmen of UCPN-Maoist Dr Baburam Bhattarai has met with the Indian high-level officials, leaders and ministers such as Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, National Security Adviser Shiv Shankar Menon and Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao and leader of Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party Sushma Swaraj on Saturday, January 5, 2011 on arrival, and External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and Home Minister P. Chidambaram on January 6, 2011. The meeting of UCPN-Maoist leader with the Indian leaders and officials indicates how much importance India has given to the UCPN-Maoist.

Most probably to rebuild smooth relations with the UCPN-Maoist, India has also decided to recall Indian Ambassador Rakesh Sood that has faced the wrath of the Maoist cadres wherever he has visited to inspect the Indian-assisted projects in different parts of Nepal.

Actually, Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda himself is supposed to visit India and address the seminar if he could have meetings with the top Indian leaders; however, Prachanda is going to India to straighten the estranged relations between India and the UCPN-Maoist soon according to the Nepalese media reports.

Similarly, NC leader-cum-Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala has also met with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao but the news of leader of CPN-UML KP Oli meeting with any Indian leaders or officials has not come to light so far.

Among other Nepalese political leaders and civil society activists, former Chief of Army Staff Rukmangud Katuwal fired by former Prime Minister Prachanda but reinstated by President Ram Baran Yadav overstepping the interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007 has also been participating in the seminar in New Delhi.

Deputy Prime Minister holding portfolio of Foreign Affairs Sujata Koirala has opened the seminar in New Delhi on January 6, 2011, and in her opening statement, she has said that the Nepalese political leaders need to rise above the partisan interests to complete the constitution writing within the extended deadline.
