Shashank Koirala is a recently elected general Secretary to the Nepali Congress. He is the youngest son of BP Koirala: the first elected prime minister of Nepal in 1959.
According to the Radio Nepal morning news analysis, Shashank Koirala came to the Om Hospital at Chabahil from his Tokha residence in Kathmandu, and admitted for some health complaints on Tuesday, July 5, 2016.
It was late afternoon for doing any detailed checkup; so it was postponed for the next day.
A personal attendant had been with Koirala in the evening. The attendant asked Koirala what he wanted to eat for dinner. Koirala said that he wanted pizza. So, the attendant brought pizza, and Koirala enjoyed eating it.
Next morning at 5:00, a nurse visited Koirala. She found him unconscious. She alerted everyone in the hospital. He had been in the conditions probably for a few hours.
Then doctors first thought that it was a heart attack but it was not. X-ray of the chest revealed that he had pneumonia and some liquid has in it from the vomit. It must have caused the heart to stop for some time.
Prime Minister KP Oli and NC Leader Ramchandra Poudel were at the hospital to see Koirala that had remained critical on Wednesday for the whole day. Oli said that the government would foot the medical bills for Koirala.
Some had thought to fly Koirala to Delhi for better treatment but the condition was so serious nobody dared to airlift Koirala to India.
On the Thursday morning, July 7, 2016, doctors attending Koirala held a news conference at the hospital to make public the health condition of Koirala.
They said that Koirala had shown some signs of improvement but he was still in the critical condition, and he was in the ICU (Intensive care unit) and on the breathing machine called ventilator.
The doctors said that if Koirala would go on improving he might be fine within two days, and would leave the hospital. However, he remains critically ill.
President of NC Sher Bahadur Deuba said that Koirala had responded to his voice, and opened up eyes.
Everybody pray to almighty for Koirala to recover soonest possible.
