NHRC Complains About Government Not Enforcing Its Recommendations

August 20, 2010: addressing a function to unveil a book today, Chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Kedarnath Upadhyaya has said that the government has failed in implementing majority of the recommendations it has made to the government during the last ten years enhancing the impunity and lawlessness in the country, nepalnews.com reports.
"The government has simply compensated the victims, but has failed to punish the perpetrators of human rights violation," Upadhyaya explained, "We want punishment for those who violated the basic human rights."
The state authorities have been responsible for 262 cases out of 386 cases of human rights violation; UCPN-Maoist for 88 cases and various state stakeholders for 36 cases states the nepalnews.com
At the same time, European Union (EU) Ambassadors and representatives of Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, and the UK have called on the NHRC to set up a joint taskforce to promote human rights, and have urged the NHRC to play a leading role in protecting and promoting human rights in Nepal coordinating with international rights organizations including the United Nations Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), nepalnews.com reports.
