Heritage Sites In Kathmandu Saved

KTM Metro Reporter

July 21, 2017

Kathmandu: Anybody visiting the core of ancient Kathmandu would find the dilapidated heritage sites the quakes had caused in 2015. The State has been able to fence those sites and prevent the common folks from entering the areas where the falling nine-storey palace might shed its portion at any time. The heads of those historical buildings have been topped with the green algae popularly called moss due to the monsoon rains that have soaked the buildings to the inner parts severely weakening them and liable to fall apart at any time.

So, UNESCO has been pressing the government of Nepal to rehabilitate those historical and cultural sites at the soonest possible time but the National Reconstruction Authority responsible authority to rebuild any damaged State buildings and provide grants and loans to individuals has not been able to meet the people’s expectation and certainly of the UNESCO.

So, UNESCO has been telling the government of Nepal that UNESCO might need to remove those heritage sites from the list of the world heritage sites if they were not fully restored. However, the director general of department of archeology has successfully bought one-year time for restoring those rites to their previous forms at the 141st UNESCO Seminar held in Poland in July this year.
