All Hospitals Closed In Protest

Issue 21, May 23, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

May 23, 2010: on the call of Nepal Medical Association (NMA), all public and private hospitals including teaching hospitals and private clinics have been shut down across Nepal protesting the government’s failure in finding out the whereabouts of disappeared Executive Director of BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital, Bharatpur Dr. Bhakta Man Shrestha even after so many days of missing. Dr. Shrestha has been missing while on his way back home from the work since Tuesday, May 18, 2010.

On Friday, May 21, 2010, NMA has submitted petition to Minister for Home Affairs Bhim Rawal for finding out the whereabouts of Dr. Shrestha, and on Saturday, May 22, 2010, has given a 48-hour ultimatum to the government for finding out the doctor but the government has failed to do anything to this end leaving no alternative to NMA but to call the shutdown of all health services across the country according to the NMA.

Xinhua news agency quoted President of NMA Dr. Kedar Narshing KC, "This is the highly reputed profession of a society but even this sector is not aloof of threats and intimidation. Health workers are being terrorized and attacked haphazardly in one or other case. We are protesting against this trend in Nepal. We are not just demanding whereabouts of Dr. Shrestha but also demanding for professional security, and we want government to give especial security to health workers and health institution."

The police have said that they have found the car belonging to the missing doctor in Pokhara and his briefcase at the Mugling area on the way to Pokhara but his whereabouts has been known, yet. The Police have suspected that an unidentified group must have kidnapped Dr. Shrestha for ransom but the family members have not received any call for ransom.
