Gay Marriage In Nepal

Issue 34, August 22, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 18, 2010: an organization called Blue Diamond Society (BDS) dedicated to the cause of gays and lesbians in Nepal has arranged a religious marriage of gays from India and UK. A Hindu priest has officiated a marriage of Sanjaya Shah from UK and S Khan from India at a Hindu temple in Kathmandu on Tuesday, August 17, 2010. They plan to live in UK. Whether the British government will recognize the marriage of Shah with Khan remains to be seen.

BDS has been forefront in working for the rights of gays and lesbians in Nepal. This organization has successfully lobbied to legalize the gay and lesbian marriages in Nepal. However, laws have yet to be formulated. Only the Supreme Court of Nepal has ordered the government to legalize the gay marriage. This organization has been working for making provision for the gay and lesbian rights in a new constitution to be proclaimed next year.

BDS has charged the couple $200 (two hundred dollars) for arranging the marriage and certifying the marriage.
