May 13, 2010: the Security Council unanimously adopted resolution on May 12, 2010 on the renewal of the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) for another four months until September 15, 2010 in line with the request made by the Government of Nepal last week according to the UN News Service posted o May 12, 2010. It has shown its concern for the recent tensions in the country and has called on all political leaders to resolve their differences through peaceful negotiations.

Briefing the Security Council last week on the latest political developments in Nepal, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Representative in Nepal, Karin Landgren has said that the peace process is at a “delicate and critical moment,” and warned of the risks if a solution is not found soon.

“The risks grow from one day to the next,” said Ms. Landgren. “This situation should not be allowed to continue, and all encouragement is needed for both sides to deepen their discussion, come to agreement, and resolve the crisis speedily.”

The outstanding tasks are to complete the peace process integrating the two armies into a single army, and the writing of a constitution by the deadline set for May 28, 2010.
