Nepal Uses Chittagong Port In Bangladesh
By KTM Metro Reporter
July 17, 2011: the Bangladeshi blogs yesterday have reported that Nepal has imported fertilizers from Morocco through Chittagong port in Bangladesh. Two trains carrying 2,389 tons di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizers left Rahanpur of Chapainawabganj for Birganj Station in Nepal. The trains will pass through Singhabad Station in India.
One train has carried 995.5 tons fertilizer in 18 wagons; another has carried 1393.5 tons in 24 wagons after the clearance from the Commerce Ministry, National Board of Revenue (NBR) and the Bangladesh Railway.
Rahanpur stationmaster Mohammad Shahidullah has told the bdnews24.com that state-owned Nepalese Agriculture Import Corporation Limited is importing 100,000 tons fertilizer.
"After unloading the fertilizer at Chittagong port, cargo vessels took it to the Noapara station of Jessore for loading in the Indian wagons," he said.
This is the first time Nepal has been able to use Chittagong port following the courtesy decisions of the prime ministers of India and Bangladesh. This is a major breakthrough in diversifying the Nepal’s access to different ports other than the Indian ports.
According to the news posted on the thedailystar.com, during the India visit, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in January last year, and Indian prime minister have agreed to give Nepal and Bhutan access to Chittagong and Mongla ports. The two leaders also agreed to establish a broad gauge railway link between Rohanpur and Singabad for transit to Nepal, and to allow trucks from Bhutan and Nepal to enter about 200 meters into Bangladesh through Indian territories.
