March 27, 2013: The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is to provide Nepal with a grant assistance of around Rs. 909 million (¥989 million) for the installation of two new radars at the Kathmandu International Airport (KIA) and at Bhatte Danda in the Lalitpur district, according to nepalnews.com & thehimalayantimes.com.
Joint secretary to the Ministry of Finance Madhu Kumar Marasini, and Chief Representative of JICA Nepal Office Tsutomu Shimizu signed the agreement at the MoF in Singha Durbar today.
Following the agreement, JICA will provide Nepal with Mono-pulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR) systems to install at the KIA and Bhatte Danda in the Lalitpur district. This will improve the aviation safety, strengthen the air transport capacity and make air traffic services effective in Nepal, said JICA.
Once the new systems are installed, radars will monitor small aircraft flying on domestic air routes as well as international aircraft flying in high altitude and extend en-route surveillance up to 200 nautical miles, according to nepalnews.com.
