Sajha Bus Service Back Soon
By KTM Metro Reporter
September 17, 2012: Sajha Yatayati is resuming its transport service soon in the Kathmandu Valley after the four years’ recess; it has planned to put in service 20 TATA-brand vehicles on two routes in the Kathmandu valley by mid-February 2013; the two routes will be Harihar Bhawan-Tripureshwor-Ranipokhari-Kamalpokhari-Gaushala-Koteshwor-Satdobato-Lagankhel and Satdobato-Lagankhel-Jaulakhel-Tripureshwor-Teku-Kalimati-Kalank, writes nepalnews.com
In 1962, the then government had launched the Sajha Yatayati as the state-run company. Then, in early 1990s, Girija Prasad Koirala became the elected prime minister after the reinstatement of the multi-party democracy. He dissolved the Sajha Yatayati, and the trolley-bus service between Kathmandu and Bhaktapur opening the opportunity to the private companies to run microbus services.
Since then, the bus service has been high cost to the commuters. The transport companies have been increasing the bus fares indiscriminately causing hardship to the commuters. Sajha Yatayati might run commuter bus service efficiently, as it would be run as a cooperative rather than a state-run company. Hopefully, it might not cause any financial burden on the government.
