Migratory Birds Finding Their Winter Home Encroached

Issue 18, April 29, 2012

By KTM metro Reporter

April 27, 2012: Siberian cranes migrating to the Nepal Terai during the winter season have been finding their home encroached because of the fast disappearance of the Lumbini wetland areas, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of April 26, 2012 writes. The bird habitat: the wetland areas surrounding the forest within the Lumbini Development area have been decreasing each year. The reduction of the wetland has been attributed to the local people grazing their cattle in these areas, and the unsystematic development of physical infrastructures around the areas.

The Lumbini Development Trust has planned to make artificial wetland areas similar to the natural habitat to host the migratory birds, and keep the areas as the winter home of these birds. The Crane Foundation and the Lumbini Development Trust have been working to set up a large area for the crane habitat.

Every year the Siberian cranes travel quite a distance to spend their winter in the warn areas of the Nepal terai and then return back to Siberia in the beginning of summer to enjoy the rich habitat there.
