Issue 33, August 18, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 15, 2013: Panchayat-era Prime Minister Marich Man Singh Shrestha peacefully died at Norvic Hospital in Kathmandu today. He had been suffering from lung cancer. He had been undergoing treatment in India for some months.

The government of Nepal has decided to provide Former Prime Minister Shrestha with the grant assistant of Rs 500,000 based on the medical bills. Now, the government has decided to give the state honor for his cremation.

Former Prime Minister Shrestha was the last prime minister of the 30-year Panchayat rule. King Mahendra had introduced a no-party system called Panchayat in 1962, and his son Birendra continued it.

People’s movement toppled the Panchayat rule and its last Prime Minister Shrestha in 1990.

All other Panchayat politicians together opened a party called Rastriya Prajatantra Party. He did not joined the party but he tried to set up a party called ‘Save the Nation” calling the king to be again dictatorial as in the Panchayat system.

Former Prime Minister Shrestha has lived enough to see the monarchy gone from Nepal forever.
