Former Pancha And Former NC President Chaudhary Passes Away

Issue 50, December 9, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 6, 2012: Parashu Narayan Chaudhary became the youngest minister in the government led by BP Koirala after the general elections held in 1959 that gave overwhelming majority to the NC. Mr. Chaudhary also became the luckiest minister as he was in Paris, France participating in the seminar held by UNESCO when the then-despot Mahendra on December 15, 1960 took over from Koirala: first democratically elected prime minister, as he escaped from the inescapable imprisonment. All ministers and leaders went either behind bars or underground. Mahendra put back the clock banning all political parties and related associations and organizations effectively making Nepal a property of the dynastic ruler.

Mr. Chaudhary did not abandon the NC of which he took the office of general secretary twice until 1982 when the referendum on the choice between a multi-party system and improved Panchayat: no-party system went in favor of the improved Panchayat. In fact, the results of the referendum were made in favor of the Panchayat at the high cost to the nation even though Nepalis voted for a multi-party system.

Then, Mr. Chaudhary abandoned the NC and joined in the Panchayat, and pleased the then despot that he even got elevated to the chairman of the Rajsabha Standing Committee: a Nepalese privy council made for declaring the crown prince a king. The parliament dissolved the committee laying off Chaudhary in course of dissolving any committees made by the despotic rulers in the past.

Strangely, none of the former Panchas have had any words for Mr. Chaudhary on his demise today but President of NC Sushil Koirala went to Aryaghat to pay the last respect for the dead body of Chaudhary before cremation, and his party in a statement has officially mourned the death of Chaudhary, and appreciated his contributions to the NC.
