UNESCO Concerns For Assaults On Reporters Covering Protest

Issue 20, May 16, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

May 11, 2010: releasing a press statement in Kathmandu on May 10, 2010, the UNESCO chief in the Kathmandu office has condemned the assaults on reporters the protestors have made on Sunday, May 9, 2010 at the time of the Maoist cadres blocking the entry point to Sighadurbar at Maitighar in Kathmandu.

“These attacks violate the fundamental rights of media professionals” reporting on yesterday’s events, the agency said in a press release. “But they also attack the right of everyone to receive a diversity of information and ideas.”

The agency said it is particularly concerned about the attacks, as the assaults on reporters have occurred just days after the world has celebrated the World Press Freedom Day on May 03, 2010.
