Sujata Koirala Becomes Deputy Prime Minister
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
On October 12, 2009, Minister for Foreign Affairs Sujata Koirala took the oath of office of Deputy Prime Minister from Prime Minister Madhav Nepal in presence of President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav at the presidential residence despite the opposition of the leader of the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party Ram Chandra Poudel and other members of the Central Working Committee of the Nepali Congress.
It is clear that President of Nepali Congress Girija Prasad Koirala has bullied other leaders of the Nepali Congress to promote his daughter Sujata Koirala to the Deputy Prime Minister and third position in the cabinet after Prime Minister Madhav Nepal and Deputy Prime Minister Bijaya Gacchedar.
Newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala has claimed that she has the support of all district cadres of the Nepali Congress and received congratulations from them on being the Deputy Prime Minister.
However, central leaders of Nepali Congress including Parliamentary Leader of Nepali Congress Ram Chandra Poudel and Acting President of Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala are not happy with the elevation of Sujata to the Deputy Prime Minister without consulting them not to mention the decision of the Central Working Committee of Nepali Congress on this matter.
Parliamentary Leader of Nepali Congress Ram Chandra Poudel has clearly said to the Prime Minister that his party has made no decision on making Sujata the Deputy Prime Minister; so, his party would not support the government as whole heartily as in the past as the Prime Minister has made Sujata Deputy Prime Minister without consulting even the parliamentary party leader of Nepali Congress.
Father Girija Prasad Koirala has been putting heavy pressure on Prime Minister Madhav Nepal to elevate his daughter to the Deputy Prime Minister. So, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal must have promoted Sujata to Deputy Prime Minister to make both the father and daughter happy.
