Provincial And Federal Elections In One Go

KTM Metro Reporter

July 30, 2017

Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and other political leaders have been saying in public that provincial and federal elections needed to be done in one go to save some money whereas Chairman of KP Oli went one stop ahead and has said that one ballot paper needs to be made for both provincial and federal elections.

These political guys have not either careful read the Constitution of 2015 or grossly ignored the provisions made for the provincial and federal elections, as their public statements clearly indicated that they were ignorant of those provisions otherwise they would not say so neither for saving money nor making easy for voters.

Speaking to the Radio Nepal morning program called ‘antar-sambad’ today, chief Election Commissioner Ayodhe Prasad Yadav quoting the Articles of the Constitution of 2015 said that the intention of the Constitution has been to hold provincial election first and then the federal election.

That is the constitutional problem why both provincial and federal elections could not be held simultaneously.

Technically, provincial and federal elections could not be held at the same time because it needs four ballot boxes, and four ballot papers. Managing space for four ballot boxes, and four ballot papers at the same time is not so simple, Chief Election Commissioner Yadav.

Then, voters have to vote for electing 165 federal lawmakers directly at 165 constituencies for a federal legislature, and then voters have to vote at 330 constituencies for the provincial legislature at seven provinces. The question is whether voters could mange to vote in so man constituencies simultaneously.
