Issue 04, January 24, 2010

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On January 20, 2010, speaking at a press meet held at the US Embassy in Kathmandu before ending his visit to Nepal, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Patrick Moon has said that the United States of America wants a stable, democratic and prosperous Nepal that honors and protects human rights. He has said that at the meetings with the Nepalese political leaders he has suggested them for keeping the deadline of May 28 for promulgating a new constitution and completing the peace process rationally.

Mr. Moon has also said that High Level Political Mechanism set up recently could bring all parties together and build the consensus politics; the USA wants the Government of Nepal end human rights abuses and the impunity, as human rights issues are the topmost priority of the USA. He has also said that the USA wants Young Communist League (YCL) to abandon violent and criminal activities.

At the same time, Asian Tribune has reported that the US has set four conditions such as giving up violence and terrorism, committing to the peace process, taming their militant youth wing Young Communist League (YCL), and revealing the killers of two US Mission staffs in Kathmandu in 2001 and 2002 for the Maoists to take them off the terrorist-watch list. Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda has urged the visiting US Deputy Assistance Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Patrick Moon to remove them from terrorist-watch list when Mr. Moon met with him at his residence.
