Appointment Of Commissioners To Election Commission

Issue 12, March 24, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

March 23, 2013: the office of the head of state has written a letter to the Chairman of Judicial Council asking whether the reappointment of the former acting chief commissioner and commissioners of the Election commission would be constitutional. The president wanted to make sure that every appointment made should be following the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007.

Chairman of Judicial council Khil Raj Regmi has forwarded the names of three former commissioners and two new names to the president for appointment to the Election Council. The president has no doubt about the new names but has some doubts about the former commissioners whether reappointing them would be constitutional.

The High-level Political Committee of the UCPN-Maoist, NC, CPN-UML and UDMF had recommended the five names: three of the former commissioners and two new ones to the Chairman of the Judicial Council for recommending them to the president for their appointments to the Election Commission.

The chairman of the Judicial Council has been consulting with the members of the High-level Political Committee that has been formed to advise and help the Chairman of the Interim Election Council in holding elections to a new CA as scheduled.
