National Security Council For Not Printing MRPs in India

Issue 15, April 11, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

April 6, 2010: In view of the security of the common Nepalis and VVIP Nepalis, the National Security Council has urged the government to change the decision on awarding the printing of machine-readable passports (MRPs) to the Indian state-owned company, and also not to accept the Indian offer to set up security printing press in Nepal stating India will be able to track down the whereabouts of VVIPs, officials of security agencies and high-level government officials of Nepal, as the company-printing MRPs could keep the vital personal data of the MRPs holders.

National Security Council comprises of senior officers of Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police and National Investigation Department; the Secretary to the Defense Ministry coordinates this council.

During the India visit of Home Minister Bhim Rawal, India had offered him to construct a building equipped with technologies for checking MRPs at the airports, which help Indians to track down even the foreigners visiting Nepal according to the nepalnews.com.

Replying to the queries of the members of the Public Account Committee, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has given various non-convincing reasons for printing MRPs in India, and demonstrated his incompetence again abusing his authority.

Some lawyers have filed two lawsuits against the government’s decision on awarding the printing of MRPs in India stating it is illegal.
