Five-day Festival Tihar Kicks off

November 12, 2012: starting off the day of crow today, the festival of Tihar popularly known as the festival of lights has kicked off. The five-day festival is for making offering to crows on the first day, to dogs on the second, cows on the third day, oxen on the fourth day and finally to brothers. 

On the third day, the whole nation gets the Tihar lights. This day is the day of cow: the Goddess of Wealth for the Hindus. In the evening, every household illuminates with different lights including oil lamps, candlelight and electric lights depending on the taste of each householder. Every house keeps light going on for welcoming the Goddess of Wealth. 

Following the Nepal Samvat, the day of Goddess of Wealth is the New Year eve. Most of the business people of the Nevah community close their annual financial account on this day only to open the next day: the New Year day. All Nepalis follow the Nepal Samvat for religious and social event 

On the fifth day, Nepalese women performer brother worship. Either the sisters or the brothers go to the house of another depending on the convenience, and perform the brother worship called Bhai-tika. Performing the brother worship, sisters wish brothers for their long and prosperous lives.
