Kathmandu: In the early 1990s when Girija Prasad Koirala was the second elected prime minister after the reinstatement of the multi-party democracy killing the no-party panchayat system former despot king Mahendra imposed in 1962, the Kathmandu-Nizgad Fast-track Highway got a huge publicity and even Girija was interested in constructing this highway but it was not done because the ministers including one prime minister after another sought rent on implementing this project.

Former Prime Minister Prachanda seriously took up this issue of constructing this highway that would save billions of NPR worth of fossil fuel again, and decided to mandate the construction of this important highway to the Nepal Army, and even laid the foundation stone before handing out the baton of administration to President of NC Sher Bahadur Deuba in 2017.

Speaking at an event held in Kathmandu on Friday, July 28, 2017, newly appointed Defense Minister Bimsendas Pradhan said that the process for purchasing equipment required for the construction of this highway has been initiated, and having dialogue with the Indian officials for acquiring explosives; the army has started the work at four different areas simultaneously; so, this highway will be done as scheduled, the news in “gorkhapatra” of today stated.
