Issue 40, September 30, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

September 29, 2012: President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav and Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai attended a special function of the chariot-pulling festival of Kumari Jatra: the main part of the Indra Jatra held at Basantapur in Kathmandu today evening. The high-profile officials watched the chariot-pulling festival of Living Goddess Kumari, Living God Ganesh and Living God Bhairav: all three of them impersonated by children.

Volunteers pull the chariots of Lord Ganesh, Lord Bhairav, and Goddess Kumari through the lower part of the old Kathmandu today, and the next day, they will pull the chariots to the upper part of the old Kathmandu. The festival ends after the chariot pulling to the middle part of the Kathmandu is done on the third day.

In 2009, the then Finance Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai refused to release the budget for celebrating the Indra Jatra causing the uproar of the common folks against the then government. After a weeklong protest, Dr. Bhattarai gave in and released the budget for celebrating the Indra Jatra festival.
