Nepalese Journalist Yadav Poudel Killed In Jhapa

April 4, 2012: Federation of Nepalese Journalist (FNJ) held a condolence meeting in Kathmandu today morning to mourn for Yadav Poudel killed by unidentified assailants in the eastern Nepal district called Jhapa on the Tuesday night, April 03, 2012 and demanded the government seriously held a probe into the murder of journalist Yadav Poudel working in Jhapa for Avenues Television and Rajdhani Daily, and working as a sub-editor for local Mechi Times, nepalnews.com reports.

FNJ has formed its own probe team comprising current and past office bearers of FNJ including journalists presided over by President of FNJ Shiva Gaule to conduct its own investigation into the murder of Poudel. FNJ also holding various protests rallies to put pressure on the government to ensure security of journalists and press freedom.

FNJ also held a corner meeting in Kathmandu today in protest against the murder of journalist Yadav Poudel in Jhapa. Speaking at the corner meeting held at Babar Mahal, Kathmandu members of various FNJ units strongly denounced the murder of journalist Poudel and called for bringing the perpetrators of killing to justice. Speaking at the same meeting, President of Nepal Bar Association Prem Bahadur Khadka and General Secretary Om Sharma said that the murder of Poudel was in fact the assault on the press freedom. Similarly, the Nepal Human Rights Journalists' Forum, Voice of the Voiceless Nepal, Professional Association for Peace and Democracy (PAPAD) also strongly condemned the killing of Poudel, RSS reports.

In a press statement released in Kathmandu today, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) also strongly condemned the murder of journalist Yadav Poudel in Jhapa, and urged the government to bring the murderer to justice holding an independent probe into the incident and provide the victim’s family with due compensation without delay, and the Biratnagar Chapter of the NHRC sent a team to the murder site to investigate the murder of journalist Poudel, ‘Thehimalayantimes.com’ reports.

A large number of people belonging to the media workers and entrepreneurs from Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari and Ilam as well as civil society members and ordinary people gathered at the funeral rites performed to the slain journalist Yadav Poudel at the Kankai river in Jhapa today afternoon, Nepal monitor reports.

A delegation of FNJ led by its eastern region coordinator Mohan Kaji and its chapter president Pokhrel went to the Jhapa District Administration Office today and presented a press statement to chief district officer Narendra Raj Sharma stating the killing of journalist Poudel involved serious conspiracy to intimidate the journalists and called for bringing the culprits to justice immediately. The Chief District Officer assured the delegation of arresting the culprits and bringing them to justice. Meanwhile, the police arrested 16 suspects in the incident.
