Shutdown Of Nepal

Issue 50, December 13, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On Sunday, December 6, 2009, the Maoists have closed all sorts of businesses including the vehicular traffic across Nepal protesting against the police killing five innocent people in the course of ejecting the landless people dwelling in the fallow land in the Kailai district on Friday, December 4, 2009 after a policeman died in the confrontation with the landless people.

On the Sunday morning, December 6, 2009, talking to the ABC TV anchor, Rights Activist Mukti Pradhan has said that both the landless people and the police are Nepalis; so they should not kill each other; the police have fired the innocent people on their heads and chests inhumanly.

The representative of the CPN-UML has said to the ABC anchor that about a week ago, they have held an all-party meeting and agreed on ejecting the landless squatters; however, the Maoist representative has said that the representative of his party has not agreed on it rather has written a note of dissent. In addition, the Maoists’ representative talking to the ABC TV has said that the landless people have simply demanded the government met its commitment.

The Kailali district has been a battleground; the government has been determined to repress the landless people rather than resolve the problems of the landless people through dialogues; the Home Minister has directly ordered to forcibly eject the landless people according to the reporters.

The police have killed five innocent people on the pretext of security provoking the nationwide protests of the Maoists. They have closed the entire country and have demanded the resignation of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. At places the police have confronted the protestors across the country on Sunday, December 6, 2009.

Human Rights Monitors have flown off to the Dhangadi but they have not been able to travel to Kailali because of the nationwide shutdown called by the Maoists. They will visit the conflict area and ascertain the responsible persons for the violence of human rights.
