Violence Against Women (VAW) Increasing In Nepal

September 13, 2013: a survey report prepared by the Women Rehabilitation Center (WOREC) stated that violence and discrimination against women have increased and reached 198 cases in Sravan (July/August); 75 women have suffered from domestic violence, 41 from social violence and nine of them murdered; 41 cases of rape and 14 of attempted to rape, 10 of sexual violence, two of trafficking were registered, according to the news posted on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’.
The WOREC report is based on the incidents of violence against women reported in the different media and on the complaints received from people at different districts.
In its monthly report, WOREC said that despite the Supreme Court’s order to make a provision for continuous hearing and delivering speedy justice to the victims of VAW and other serious Human Rights Violation victims, cases of VAW have increased across the country significantly.
The WOREC report has it that its serious attention had been drawn to the gang rape of a teen-year-old girl at the Rautahat district. The perpetrators of violence took away the victim from her house while she was asleep and raped her. Another case was a woman in the Parsa district was murdered for not being able to conceive a baby.
