Laying A Foundation Stone For A Republic Tower In Kirtipur

April 27, 2012: Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai laid a foundation stone for building a Republic Tower at Gangkhel to the west of the Tribhuvan University (TU) Examinations Controller Office at a function held in Kirtipur yesterday, ‘The Himalayan Times’ writes quoting the state news agency RSS.
The tower will be of 94 meters high built on the land of 53 ropanis at the cost of Rs 1.21 billion; about 150 people can be accommodated on the top of the tower and view the Kathmandu valley. This tower will be the highest one in the Kathmandu Valley.
Speaking at the foundation-stone-laying ceremony, Prime Minister Dr Bhattarai said that the government has chosen this site for the monument of republic at Kirtipur as a symbol of the end of the monarchy as Kirtipur symbolizes the rise of the Shah dynasty.
Minister for Physical Planning and Works Hridayesh Tripathi thanked the TU officials for making available the land for the construction of the Republic Monument tower.
Originally, the government had planned to build a tower as the part of the Republic Monument in the compound of the Narayanhiti Palace but former Prime Minister Madhav Nepal changed the decision of the previous government on building a Republic monument in the Narayanhiti Palace rather laid a foundation stone for building a republic monument tower at Ratnapark in 2009
Prime Minister Bhattarai laid a foundation stone for building a Statue of Republic in the Narayanhiti Palace on March 27, 2012 at the cost of Rs 460 million in three years.
