Public-Private Partnership Seminar

On Tuesday, October 21, 2008, addressing the inaugural ceremony of a two-day National Seminar on Public-Private Partnership 2008, Prime Minister Prachanda said that public-private partnership (PPP) was the best model for economic development in Nepal and this model would go ahead following the requirements of the country. He said that his government would create a climate conducive to investment making the bureaucracy that had been hurdles in the past move through a fast-track route removing the official hurdles to investment as soon as possible.

Prime Minister Prachanda assured international investors of full support from the Maoist-led government for investment in mega projects. He repeated his commitment to pursuing liberal economic policy and promoting private investment and called on national and international investors for investing in mega projects such as East-West railway, Kathmandu-Terai Fast Track road and large hydropower projects in Nepal.

In the welcoming speech, President of Federation of Nepal Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) Kush Kumar Joshi said that the public-private partnership could be in education, health, telecommunications, energy, infrastructure, tourism and agricultural sectors.

Ministry of Local Development and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) jointly with the FNCCI have held the seminar to promote private sector's investment in economic development in Nepal.
