Happy Mother’s Day In Nepal

Issue 19, May 12, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

May 9, 2013: millions of Nepalis have been busy with celebrating the mother’s day today revering their dead or alive mothers. Today is the new moon day of the Vaishak month in the Vikram calendar.

Sons and daughters whose mothers have been no more on this earth went to different nearby temples to revere the deity in the names of their deceased mothers, and then offer various food items to the priests believing that the priests would take those foods to their deceased mothers.

Hundreds of sons and daughters made their way to ‘Matta-tirtha’ a few kilometers west of Kathmandu to venerate their deceased mothers. Most of them believe that souls of their deceased mothers visit ‘Matta- tirtha’ on this day.

Some of the sons perform ‘shrada’ means an elaborate offering to the souls of their mothers at ‘Matta-tirtha’ on this day. They sit on a row, and priests call the souls of deceased mothers to come and accept the offerings made by their sons. Others simply take a holy dip in a pond for wash or take a wash in the water coming out of the number of open stone spouts at ‘Matta- tirtha’. Then they go to a pond where they believe that the reflection of their mothers could be seen, anticipating to see the reflection of their mothers. It is one of the many myths Nepalis have.

Hundreds of sons and daughters visit their mothers today. Most of the women dressed in their wedding attires, and carrying a load of delicious dishes, and with some gifts visit their mothers. Then, all the sons and the daughters sit around their mothers. Each one of them in turn offers a dish and or a gift to their mothers. Thereafter, everybody sits for feasting on the dishes they have brought.
