Women Human Rights Defenders And Their Security

November 30, 2012: Women Human Rights Defenders have marked the ‘International Day on Women Human Rights Defenders’ around the world yesterday. The November 29 has been marked as the ‘International Day on Women Human Rights Defenders’ since 2005 every year to create awareness of the need for defending the women human rights and to acknowledge the work women have been doing on defending human rights worldwide, and both women and men have been doing to protect the women's rights even putting their lives at risk, according to the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT) and the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH).
Several human rights organizations held the First International Consultation on Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) in Colombo, Sri Lanka on November 29, 2005; they declared November 29 as the International Day on WHRDs.
The irony is that the society, common people, family members and even the government in the countries such as Afghanistan, India, Iran, Gulf countries, Nepal and Pakistan harass these human rights defenders, and threaten them with their lives thus putting them at risk of losing their human rights. Even husbands of the WHDRs have been harassing them for the work they have been doing on defending the human rights of the people. Some terrorists had attempted on the life of a young girl that had been advocating for the girls’ education in Pakistan. Daughters-in-law become the victims of their husbands and other family members when they fail to bring sufficient dowry in India and Nepal. Women trafficking have been frequent occurrences in Nepal.
