Custody Room Filled Up With Arrestees

Issue 34, August 25, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 22, 2013: the custody room allocated for boarding the arrestees charged with corruption at the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has been filled up with the high officials of Nepal Electricity Authority charged with the irregularities in purchasing more than five billion worth of transformers, and the custom officials involved in corruption.

CIAA has sent some of the arrestees to the custody room of the Kathmandu metropolitan police, and to the Kathmandu jail. Probably, the arrestees are a few drops in the bucket of corrupt officials in the Nepalese bureaucracy.

CIAA has arrested about 20 officials including the Executive Director of the NEA for investigating the irregularities in purchasing transformers. CIAA also has arrested some officials working at the custom office at the International Airport in Kathmandu for taking bribes.

CIAA keeps them for about ten days with the permission of the Special Court for holding investigation into the irregularities they have committed why performing the State duty. Widespread irregularities in the Nepalese State bureaucracy are quite well known to the common folks; however, only a few cases come to the notice of the CIAA.
