Major Task Of Peace Process: Army Integration Completed

December 17, 2012: speaking at a press conference held at the Ministry of Information and Communications today, Assistant Spokesperson for the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction Prem Prasad Sanjel said that major task of the peace process: the army integration completed consequently vacating all the cantonments across Nepal, according to the RSS news.

Cantonment offices at the seven areas opened by the government were winded down; no more combatants were left at any cantonment as of yesterday, according to the Assistant Spokesperson for the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction. The Peace Ministry is winding down the central cantonment management coordination office on January 14, 2013, according to thehimalayantimes.com.

According to the Assistant Spokesperson for the Peace Ministry, the Peace Ministry has dissolved the army integration special committee secretariat, and set up a coordination committee instead, and appointed Balanand Sharma as a chairman of the committee, and two members and the employees as required by the committee.

The army integration was the major task of the peace process. About 1,500 Maoist combatants joined the Nepal Army. Out of 19,000 Maoist combatants, some 3,000 combatants were declared disqualified, and relieved without any sorts of benefits. They have been fighting for removing the label of disqualification on them and demanding the retirement benefits as received by other combatants.

Other task of the peace process was to set up a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, to find out the whereabouts of the victims of the enforced disappearances done both by the state and the Maoists during the 10-year long conflict, and reconcile the families of victims of the enforced disappearances, and injured people with the perpetrators of the crimes compensating the victims for the loss of their loved ones and injuries, and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
