December 30, 2012: as the deadline set for forming a new government ended on the Saturday, the president has no choice but to extend it. So, President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav extended the deadline until January 4, 2013.
On Monday, December 24, 2012, before leaving Nepal for India, President Dr. Yadav had told the political leaders that he would like to see the political leaders forming a new government by the time he would be back home from the India visit. When President Dr. Yadav was back home on Saturday, the leaders had not moved even an inch to build a new government.
Today, the president again invited the leaders of the four major political parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC, CPN-UML and UDMF, and told them to make the use of the deadline for forming a new consensus government, and build a consensus on removing all legal hurdles to hold elections to a new CA in May.
The opposition coalition of the NC and the CPN-UML has been demanding the resignation of the prime minister and turning over the power to the NC leader Sushil Koirala before doing anything. This is what the bottom line for them to build a consensus on anything concerning the state affairs, elections to a new CA, and institutionalizing the federal democratic republic of Nepal.
However, the prime minister says that I have been carrying my resignation letter in my pocket, and ready to submit it to them at any time they would make sure that the elections to a new CA are hold; to this end they have to reach a package deal on all the matters concerning a new constitution including federalism, completing the peace process, setting a date for holding the elections, and finally removing all legal hurdles to holding the elections, and making appointments to the judiciary, and constitutional bodies. All the constitutional bodies have been dysfunctional due to the vacant positions of high-ranking officials.
Speaking at the function of opening a hotel at Parewa Danda in Tanahun today, Vice-chairman of the NC Ram Chandra Poudel said that holding the CA polls in April/May was more important than changing the leader in the current situation but the incumbent government could not hold the fresh polls; so his boss Sushil Koirala should be made the prime minister, according to the THT ONLINE news of today. This statement makes it clear that the mindset of Mr. Poudel has been to hold the taking power hostage, no matter what happens to the country and elections even though he said that the holding elections was more important than anything to him.
Speaking at an interaction event held by the Reporters Club Nepal in Tulsipur, Dang today, another leader of NC Dr Shekhar Koirala said that the NC would not go against democratic norms, values and his party ideology for the power; the UCPN-Maoist was hell-bent on capturing the state, so, his party along with other small parties was to launch a protest to sack the Prime Minster Baburam Bhattarai-led caretaker government, according to the THT ONLINE news of today. Mr. Koirala simply ignored the fact that the UCPN-Maoist has the state. Concerning the ideology of his party, the sincere people see that it is corruption but nothing; the results are four NC former ministers had been convicted of corruption. Three of them are serving jail term in the Kathmandu jail.
