Recommending Girija Prasad Koirala For Noble Peace Prize

Issue 52, DEcember 27, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Girija Prasad Koirala must have sighed in relief, as the government has at least recommended his name for the Noble Peace award of 2010. His political career has reached the pinnacle after the government of Madhav Nepal has recommended his name for the Noble Peace Award appreciating his contribution to bring the 10-year old conflict to an end.

Girija Prasad Koirala deserved to be the first President of Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal but sadly he could not achieve his goal of getting that position. However, it is not late to achieve the ambition of being the President as the current President has abused the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007 and has to go sooner or later. So, Girija Prasad Koirala needs to work to make the rule of law a reality by asking the President for stepping down for his fault in directly writing a letter to the army chief.

In the end, of course, Girija Prasad Koirala will be judged for his contribution to the peace and prosperity in Nepal. After much gamesmanship, he has sidelined his rivals and has gained upper hands in the Nepalese politics but lately, his junior colleagues have obviously sidelined him from having the major say in the politics of his party. Currently, he could be a bridge over the rift between the government and the opposition but he has not done so, yet. He has been drawing less and less attention of the people and politicians. Some people even have said that he has been politically a vegetable.

His mission to the peace and stability in Nepal completes only after completing the currently stalled peace process and writing of a new constitution. The current government of Madhav Nepal has been the strong wall against the completion of the peace process. Girija Prasad Koirala needs to tear down this wall. The current government is formed after the crass political horse-trading engineered by the Indian ambassador to Nepal Mr. Rakesh Sood buying the votes of unprincipled legislators in June 2009.

Girija Prasad Koirala’s skills as a political manipulator is widely known but he is less known as the follower of the rule of law, as more often than not he has loved to dictate his decisions to his party colleagues.
